How Many Washer Extractors Does a 100-Room Hotel Need?

Short answer: Most 100 room hotels need two to three washer extractors, often a mix of a larger machine for sheets and towels and a smaller one for uniforms and delicates. The exact number depends on occupancy, linen weight per room, operating hours and whether the hotel has a restaurant, spa or banquet hall.

What is a washer extractor and how does it work in commercial laundry?

A washer extractor is a machine that washes and spins linen in one drum. During the wash it tumbles linen slowly in water and chemicals. At the end it spins fast to push out water. This single machine replaces separate washing and hydro extraction steps, saving handling time and space in hotel laundries.

The quick sizing formula

Use this simple calculation:

  1. Occupied rooms = total rooms multiplied by average occupancy
  2. Daily linen weight = occupied rooms multiplied by kilograms of linen per room
  3. Add extras such as restaurant linen, spa towels, pool towels and uniforms
  4. Divide by operating hours to get required kilograms per hour
  5. Divide by machine output to find the number of machines

A worked example

Take a 100 room hotel at 75 percent occupancy.

  • Occupied rooms: 75
  • Linen per room: around 3 to 5 kg, depending on category
  • Room linen: roughly 225 to 375 kg a day
  • Add F&B, spa and staff uniforms: perhaps 75 to 100 kg more
  • Total: around 300 to 475 kg a day

Now think about machine output. A 25 to 30 kg extractor washing machine typically completes roughly one cycle in 45 to 60 minutes, so it processes around 25 to 30 kg an hour in practice. Over an 8 hour shift, that is about 200 to 240 kg.

So for 300 to 475 kg a day:

  • Two 30 kg machines can handle the lower end
  • Two larger machines, say 30 and 50 kg, or three machines, handle the upper end and give breathing room

Please treat these as planning figures. Actual cycle times depend on your wash programmes and linen.

A commercial laundry washer of 25 to 30 kg is the workhorse for most hotels of this size, with a second, larger or smaller unit added for balance. If your hotel also runs a spa, pool and banquet hall, add a 30 percent buffer to the estimate and talk to your supplier about a third machine. It is easier to start with space and utilities ready for it than to retrofit later.

Why a mix of sizes works better

One huge machine looks efficient, but it has a weakness. On a quiet day, you run it half empty and waste water and energy. Several machines of different sizes let you:

  • Run full loads more often
  • Keep working if one machine goes down
  • Separate towels, sheets, uniforms and delicates
  • Handle peaks by running more machines in parallel

Other factors that change the answer

  • Occupancy swings. Resorts and wedding hotels can double their load on peak weekends.
  • Linen policy. Daily sheet changes versus change on request make a big difference.
  • Bath and pool towels. Heavy towels slow cycles.
  • Operating hours. A laundry running 16 hours needs fewer machines than one running 6.
  • Outsourcing. Some hotels send banquet linen out, which reduces in house load.

Don't forget the dryers and finishing

A washer extractor is only half the story. Make sure you plan:

  • Dryers with enough drum volume, often around double the washer capacity
  • A flatwork ironer for sheets and table linen
  • Folding tables and storage
  • Utilities: water, drainage, steam or gas, and power

Pick commercial washing machine for hotels models that offer programmable controls and strong extraction, since drier linen saves time and fuel in the dryer.

Signs you picked too small

  • Linen is delivered late
  • Staff run extra shifts
  • Machines run nonstop
  • Par stock keeps rising

Signs you picked too big

  • Loads are consistently half full
  • Water and energy bills look high for the volume
  • Machines wait idle for long periods

Plan the room layout

Leave at least a metre of clear space around each machine for loading, trolleys and service access. Keep soiled linen entering on one side and clean linen leaving on the other. Place dryers close to washers to cut handling, and keep the ironer near the clean linen store. A well planned room often adds more capacity than another machine would.

Revisit the numbers after the first year of operation. Actual occupancy and linen weight often differ from the plan, and a quick review helps you tune programmes and shift patterns.
